Vulcan Block 45 is a 13-story, 317,000sf office building with four levels of below grade parking. The structure is part of Amazon’s headquarter expansion in Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood. The project includes private and open offices, conference rooms and break areas. The exterior of the building is clad with metal panel and stone veneer finishes over prefabricated metal stud panels.
The Vulcan Block 45 Exterior Project in Seattle, WA proved to be an exceptional accomplishment of a project for WPI. As well as a Premier Project for NBBJ Architects and Vulcan Property in 2015. Turner Construction, the General Contractor, and NBBJ Architects together led the Project Team in designing a project that rose up and climbed over the neighborhood of South Lake Union at a much faster pace than most. WPI made use of BIM modeling, which helped complete this extremely fast pace panel project within the fourteen month window.
WPI built 385 individual panels, ranging in size, complete with sheathing and air/vapor barrier. Panels were fabricated at an offsite facility in Salem, Oregon and trucked over 300 miles to the jobsite. Thus utilizing the “Just-in-Time” material management system due to constricted site conditions and limited storage space. WPI averaged ten tower panels (31’x12’6”) and sixteen podium panels, completely installed and secured in place per day. This is particularly amazing when you think about having to utilize a non-dedicated crane and concrete pours continuing at the same time as panel installations. WPI takes great pride in the fact that this project was awarded the 2016 NWCB Washington Exterior Panelized Project of the year award.
