Shawn Coates has 13 years of experience on the operations management side of the construction industry. He has been in construction management for the last 5 years and has a complete cradle to grave understanding of project management.
While at WPI, Shawn has climbed the construction operations ladder from Project Engineer to Vice President of Sales & Estimating. He has worked as a Project Manager, Estimator, Senior Estimator and Corporate Chief Estimator. Due to his work ethic and fierce ability to focus, he has recently been promoted to his current position as Vice President of Sales & Estimating.
Shawn is also a member of the American Society of Professional Estimators (ASPE) and has been involved with award winning projects for WPI. Most notably, the Interior Gonzaga University Center project he worked on was named NWCB Project of the Year (Interior). This was a showpiece project, illustrating some of the highest level work that WPI is capable of performing. Shawn was the estimator on this project.
Shawn credits his 4th Grade Teacher, Mr. Horn as the person that taught him the value of doing things right the first time. Mr. Horn quoted Abraham Lincoln often saying, “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I’ll spend the first four sharpening the axe.” Shawn values tolerance, persistence and humility which is one of the reason he loves the game of golf so much. Items on his bucket list include playing 18 holes of golf at the Augusta National followed closely by traveling to Africa, and being a WWII Fighter Pilot for a day. Shawn’s favorite movie is Cast Away. He would definitely survive on a deserted island alone for years – it’s his drive and focus that would sustain him.
