Gonzaga University Center

The John J. Hemmingston University Center located on the Gonzaga University campus in Spokane, WA proved to be an unforgettable project for Western Partitions Inc. as well as a crown jewel for the Bulldogs. Hoffman Construction, the general contractor and Opsis Architecture together led the project team including WPI through a partnering and collaboration process to complete this beautiful 168,000sf project within a fifteen month window. WPI’s scope of work on this project included the non-structural metal framing, exterior load bearing framing, drywall, air and weather barrier, acoustical ceilings and linear wood ceilings.  This unique project is situated in the heart of the Gonzaga campus looking directly at McCarthy Center. The location and restricted space created extreme storage and logistical issues with over 382,000sf of drywall, over 70,000sf of acoustical grid and 20,000sf of linear wood ceilings panels, coordination was of the utmost importance. Not to mention, school was in session for three quarters of the construction process. This required WPI to adequately plan out the work ahead and use the “Just in Time” delivery process.

The carpenters of WPI installed almost five miles of metal stud walls and soffits with thousands of LF of pre-manufactured radius track and angle. It is quite amazing to stand in the open atrium and rotunda area, looking up and knowing the amount of hard work and preservation it took to establish and transfer all of the radius working points. WPI thanks our highly skilled workers from three of the Unions and Associations that WPI are signatory with, the UBC IES Carpenters, the IUPAT Tapers, the OPCMIA Plasterers, for all of their efforts building this outstanding project that will serve Gonzaga University and Bulldog fans from local and abroad for decades to come.
